Overview of Spendicity Consumer Behavior Data

Spendicity data provides current year consumer spending for more than 500 individual products or services. By applying sophisticated “big data” analytics to the annual Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Spendicity dataset delivers reliable estimates of household expenditures. Our documentation gives additional data about the Spendicity dataset together with a methodological summary.
The dataset has been grouped by consumption categories with 11 categories, 43 groups, 129 subgroups and 524 individual variables. For each of these variables, the dataset includes three complete sets of information for all 707 variables.

 

Current
Averages

The annual average expenditure for each household in the geographic area is provided for each variable, subgroup, group and category. The variable ID for the averages includes the variable ID plus the letters “VC” appended to it.

Current
Aggregates

The annual aggregate expenditure of all households in the geographic area is provided for each variable, subgroup, group and category. The variable ID for the averages includes the variable ID plus the letters “GC” appended to it.

Current
Per Capita

The annual per capita expenditure for each person in the geographic area is provided for each variable, subgroup, group and category. The variable ID for the averages includes the variable ID plus the letters “CC” appended to it.   

Spendicity Variables by Consumption Categories

The Spendicity variables span across these 11 retail and service-oriented categories:

FOOD

The data on food includes both food that is consumed at home and away from home. The category includes all types of food including produce, meats, dairy and processed foods and drinks. Food consumed away from home includes fast food and full service restaurants, vending machines, employers and schools, boarding houses and catered events.

HOUSING

The housing category broadly covers everything that deals with personal shelter, utilities, household services and supplies, furnishings, appliances and housewares. It includes services such as repairs and maintenance of facilities and equipment, and the care of children and the elderly.

TRANSPORTATION

The data on transportation encompasses both personal vehicles and various forms of public transportation. Data concerning personal vehicles involves everything from purchase/lease to repair/maintenance to gasoline/oil to registration/inspection, accessories, rentals and tolls/fees. Public transportation includes commercial, transit, and other forms.

APPAREL

The apparel section includes men's & boys, women's & girls and infants apparel. Footwear and shoe services for these groups is also enumerated. Apparel accessories focuses on sewing materials, alterations and repair, rental, storage, laundry and dry cleaning. Watches, jewelry, and repair are also included in this section.

PROFESSIONAL

The professional services data are primarily financial related plus personal services such as legal, accounting, property assessment and funeral expenses. The financial services include banking, health insurance, property insurance, automotive insurance and investment services.

HEALTH

The consumer health data only include household spending (co-pays, health insurance premiums etc) and do not include health benefits. It does include hospitalization, physician costs, labs and tests, medical services, and prescriptions.

PERSONAL

Personal care products and services are included in this data. Products include hair care, personal hygiene and care equipment and repair. Personal care services focuses on services for both men and women, job counseling, dating and miscellaneous services.

EDUCATIONAL

The educational data involves tuition and fees, supplies and equipment, and educational services for youth and adults. Youth variables include preschool, and elementary/high school tuition, supplies and equipment. Adult education focuses on college and vocational technical schools.

ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment category broadly covers all facets of entertainment from fees and admissions to sporting equipment to hobbies to pets, toys and playground equipment to reading materials to entertainment services. Sporting equipment includes camping, hunting and fishing as well as seasonal equipment, sports vehicles and exercise equipment.

TECHNOLOGY

The technology section encompasses diverse products from computer technology to office equipment to video and audio to online expenses. Various digital device variables and downloading and streaming audio and video variables are included in this section.

SUBSTANCE & GAMBLING

Various types of tobacco products and lottery and parimutuel betting expenses are included in the substance and gambling category. Cigarettes, cigars chewing tobacco and smoking accessories are among the variables.  Estimates of illegal drug and marijuana use is included.
