Overview of the Povertyscape: Living Below the Line Data

Povertyscape Variables by Classometry Categories

The Povertyscape variables span across these 5 Classometry Categories -- three below the poverty line and two categories of the working class that are just barely above the poverty line.

EXTREMERS

The EXTREMERS live in extreme poverty with incomes well below the poverty line. Individuals and families, including children, go hungry on a regular basis.  Because of unsteady employment and unstable shelter situations, some slip into homelessness at times.

DEEPERS

Many of the DEEPERS live in deep poverty while working making incomes significantly less than the poverty line.  As the working poor they are one major set back away from slipping into the EXTREMERS category.

CHRONICS

Many of the CHRONICS live in poverty for generations while making incomes just below the poverty line.  As the working poor they have become accustomed to their life situation creating a culture of poverty that is passed to the next generation.

EXISTERS

The EXISTERS live pay-check-to-pay-check as they struggle to live on minimal wages.  With little to no real benefits they continue to work several part-time jobs in order to try to meet the needs of their family and stay just above the poverty line.

WORKFORCERS

WORKFORCERS aspire to move into the middle class but their lack of job skills or education keep them working at either low-wage manual labor or occupations that pay minimal wages.  While just above the EXISTERS, the WORKFORCERS are like the EXISTERS with continual risk of falling back into the ranks of those below the poverty line.
